The Difference Between Being Significant and Feeling Superior
There will always be someone smarter, stronger, better looking, more talented, funnier, or more successful than you.
That's simply reality. And if you're honest with yourself, you already know it.
But if your sense of significance depends on being better than everyone around you, you have a problem. And people often deal with that problem in one of two ways.
The first is to surround yourself with people you believe are beneath you.People who don't challenge you, don't threaten your ego, and allow you to feel like the smartest or most important person in the room.
But when nobody challenges you, you stop growing.
The second is to lie to yourself about who you are.You exaggerate your strengths, minimize your weaknesses, dismiss the accomplishments of others, and convince yourself you're somehow superior.
But when you stop being honest with yourself, you stop learning.
Both choices accomplish the same thing. They protect your ego at the expense of your growth.
But there's a third choice. And it's the one that actually makes you better.Accept that someone else being smarter doesn't make you stupid. Someone else being stronger doesn't make you weak. Someone else being more successful doesn't make you a failure.
Surround yourself with people who know things you don't know, who can do things you can't do, and who have accomplished things you haven't accomplished.
Learn from them. Celebrate their accomplishments. Allow them to challenge you.
Because significance isn't about being better than the people around you.
It's about becoming better because of the people around you.And here's the irony.
The people who are secure enough to admit they're not the best at everything are often the very people who accomplish the most.
The moment you need to be the smartest person in the room is the moment you've made that room too small for yourself.
You don't have to be superior to anyone to be significant.
Your significance comes from what you contribute, what you create, what you teach, what you learn, and the positive difference you make in the lives of others.
And when someone better comes along, your significance doesn't diminish.
It becomes another opportunity to grow.
Because the goal should never be to surround yourself with people you can look down on.The goal should be to surround yourself with people who inspire you to look up, learn, and become more than you were yesterday.
